Our Head of Academics, Victor McClean, who leads the MUN experience, celebrates the success of our students.

Recently, a group of fifteen Brillantmont International School students took part in the prestigious THIMUN (The Hague International Model United Nations) conference in Singapore. As the school’s Head of Academics, I am filled with pride each year as our students embrace this extraordinary opportunity to engage in real world diplomacy, which combines intellectual challenge with the chance to collaborate globally. For over 40 years, Brillantmont has been committed to participating in THIMUN conferences, and this year’s event in Singapore underscored our students’ dedication to developing as globally minded citizens.

MUN as a platform for leadership and confidence-building 

For Brillantmont students, Model United Nations is much more than an after school activity; it is a transformative experience that allows them to become confident communicators and critical thinkers. During the months leading up to THIMUN, our students immersed themselves in global issues, studying the diverse subjects on this year’s agenda, which covered crucial topics such as sustainable development and international security. At the conference, they delved deeply into these subjects, collaborating with fellow delegates from around the world to explore and propose solutions.

One of the most rewarding aspects of MUN is seeing students build confidence in public speaking. Many start with understandable nerves, but the structured debates at THIMUN provide a unique platform for them to express their views persuasively. Each session strengthens their self-assurance, as they learn to articulate complex ideas in front of an international audience. Watching our students interact confidently and with poise on topics of such significance is a testament to the growth MUN encourages.

The holistic impact of MUN on student development

At Brillantmont, we view MUN as a key component of holistic education, nurturing essential skills for the 21st century such as teamwork, emotional intelligence, and independent research. THIMUN aligns perfectly with our school’s Service and Leadership Programme, equipping our students with not just academic skills, but also with life skills that will be valuable across any field of study or future career. MUN fosters resilience, adaptability, and open mindedness — qualities that are vital in today’s interconnected world.

Returning from THIMUN Singapore, our students are not only more knowledgeable but also more confident, more open minded and more prepared to engage in meaningful dialogue on complex issues. At Brillantmont, we encourage each student to participate in at least one MUN conference during their time at school. Year after year, we witness the numerous benefits these experiences bring to our students, from heightened confidence to deeper understanding and a drive to contribute positively to society.

Founded in 1882, Brillantmont International School is the oldest family owned and run boarding school in Switzerland, which offers a warm welcoming environment.
