At the end of February 2024, nine of our younger students took part in the international mathematics competitions organised by Waterloo University in Canada. The competitions are full of challenging maths puzzles that require excellent problem-solving skills to decipher and answer. Each competition was taken by around 20 000 students from around the world under exam conditions.
Seven of our grade 9 students and one grade 8 student took part in the Pascal competition. As a keen mathematician who enjoys a challenge, 9th Grader, James, elected to try the more difficult grade 10 Cayley competition.
Here is an example of one of the questions. See how you do!
From the beginning of the academic year, Ms Ho Tai and Mr Toth helped prepare the interested students to tackle these fiendishly difficult questions and by February, they were ready. We are incredibly proud of all those who took part, and we are particularly impressed by James, Kathy and Apple, who all managed to get official Distinctions in their respective competitions. Distinctions are only awarded to those students who are placed in the top 25% of the overall rankings.
James scored 144 out of 150 points by getting 24 out of 25 questions correct. This placed him on the international honour roll published by Waterloo University.
"He never shies away from a challenge. We can give him something very complicated, and James will stick with it and really tries to solve it. He enjoys this and he is incredible!" said Ms Ho Tai.
Brillantmont students Apple and James had wonderful results.
We look forward to welcoming your child to Brillantmont, so we can nurture their mathematical skills. We'd love to tell you more, so please fill out this form now to fix a Zoom meeting.
