Internet Safety and Cyber Bullying at Boarding School

Written by Sarah Frei | 27-May-2016 12:00:00

In our blog post of a few months ago entitled Protecting Your Child from Cyber Bullying at Boarding School, we discussed the often-serious issue of cyber bullying and how school staff and parents alike can take responsibility for prevention and care. In this article, we share with you what Brillantmont does to tackle cyber bullying.

Social media platforms evolve rapidly and there always seems to be some new, creative means available to keep in contact with our friends. Yet, these very platforms can also be a source of danger, giving quick access to all sorts of inappropriate content and above all, inappropriate individuals.

Bullying, grooming, and a multitude of other, harmful behaviours lurk just beneath the surface. Internet safety is therefore essential. Keeping young people safe and aware of the risks they take when using technology is a crucial role of any school today.

The approach at Brillantmont International School is to educate and inform the whole community about the responsible use of technology. The school benefits from being small, which enables us to effectively monitor, but even more importantly, act quickly and appropriately as issues arise. In addition, our staff are acutely sensitive to the challenges pertaining to modern technology and the internet in particular and keep an eye out for signs of bullying.

Ongoing responses at Brillantmont include the use of external experts holding workshops with staff and small groups of students, making them aware of online reputation and appropriate conduct. Our boarding staff encourage open conversations and PSHE class provides the opportunity for students to discuss their concerns.

One can argue about whether or not blocking access to certain sites or removing technology is beneficial. Curious and tech-savvy youngsters can often find ways around restrictions. Our approach is one based on openness and frank discussion- both essential in building a strong sense of community, trust, and mutual respect.

If you have any further questions about the approach we take in regards to internet safety and cyber bullying, or if you just want to learn more about our international school programmes and the support we provide our students, please contact us directly.
