7 Great Coding class - Brillantmont

Coding at Brillantmont: Building Strong Foundations

| 0 comments| by JK JK

In our Grade 8 coding classes, students have been learning to programme in Python, currently the most widely used programming language in the world. Python is a fantastic language to learn at Brillantmont, providing students with a strong foundation for future study in higher education and beyond. Because of our small class sizes and personalised learning environment, each student is gaining confidence as they work through increasingly complex tasks.

To support their understanding, students are introduced to core computational thinking skills such as problem-solving, debugging, and logical reasoning. These skills form the basis for all future coding work, helping students see how ideas can be broken down into steps and translated into functioning code.

Alejandro has produced an impressive and original version of the classic Snake game, which can be viewed and played via this link:

His project demonstrates a solid understanding of complex variables, conditional statements, functions, and loops, resulting in a highly engaging and interactive game. The current version works best when using a keyboard but we are working on a version suitable for mobile devices. Projects like Alejandro’s highlight how quickly students can progress when supported by teachers who know them well and can offer guidance tailored to their individual level.

Looking ahead, our coding classes will move on to robotics and web-based development using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. These are the three core languages used to build nearly every modern website or online application, and gaining early familiarity with them helps students understand the digital world they interact with every day.

  • HTML (HyperText Markup Language) is used to structure webpages. It tells the browser what elements should appear on the page - such as text, headings, images, and buttons.
  • CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) controls the visual presentation. It determines colours, fonts, spacing, layout, and overall design, helping students appreciate the connection between aesthetics and function.
  • JavaScript adds interactivity. It allows webpages to respond to user actions, display animations, handle data, and create dynamic content. It is a vital skill for anyone interested in web development or modern digital technology.

Learning these languages provides students with practical, transferable skills that align perfectly with our forward-thinking educational approach. They also complement the IGCSE and A Level pathways offered at Brillantmont, giving students a head start should they choose to pursue Computing, Engineering, Design, or related paths in the future.

Our aim is to offer students a well-rounded education that prepares them for whichever pathways they choose at a higher level. By combining Python, robotics, and web development, we help students build creativity, resilience, and technical understanding - essential tools for success in an increasingly digital world.

Does this sound like the kind of school you're seeking for your child? We'd love to tell you more, so please fill out this form now to fix a Zoom meeting.
