Bringing science to life: Our chemistry classes in action!

| 0 comments| by Sarah Frei Sarah Frei

Our science lessons are designed to develop both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Grade 8 students have been investigating how energy is stored in food, while AS Chemistry students have been refining their precision techniques through acid-base titrations.

These hands-on activities help students connect classroom learning to real world applications, fostering a deeper understanding of key scientific principles.

Grade 8: Investigating energy in food

Guided by Dr Rachael Walker, Grade 8 students explored the energy content of different foods, linking their findings to the study of carbohydrates and nutrition.

Their lessons began with understanding how plants perform photosynthesis to produce sugars, which are then converted into starch. This led to discussions about the role of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, and minerals in a balanced diet.

One of the key experiments involved burning different food items to determine their energy content. By measuring how much heat energy was released when foods were burned, students could calculate their energy value using the formula:

Energy in food = rise in temperature × mass of water × specific heat capacity of water

Through this experiment, students discovered that Pringles contained the most energy, highlighting the significant caloric value of fats and carbohydrates!

This activity not only reinforced their understanding of nutrition but also developed their ability to conduct accurate scientific measurements and calculations.

AS Chemistry: Mastering acid-base titrations
Meanwhile, AS Chemistry students, under the guidance of Jenny Harold, focused on acid-base titrations to determine the concentration of an unknown solution. This practical skill is essential for their upcoming AS level practical examination in May.

As part of the experiment, students first prepared a standard solution through a precise dilution process. Using burettes and pipettes, they carefully carried out titrations, ensuring accuracy in their measurements. These skills are crucial in analytical chemistry, where even minor errors can impact results.

By mastering these techniques, students not only reinforced their understanding of chemical reactions but also gained confidence in laboratory work an important foundation for further scientific studies!

A hands on approach to science
Science at Brillantmont is about more than just memorising facts; it is about applying knowledge through experimentation and analysis. From investigating food energy to perfecting titration techniques, our students engage in meaningful scientific inquiry that prepares them for future academic success.

Does this sound like the kind of school you're seeking for your child? We'd love to tell you more, so please fill out this form now to fix a Zoom meeting.

Brillantmont International School in Lausanne, Switzerland

Brillantmont Inernational School - Lausanne in Switzerland

Founded in 1882, Brillantmont International School is the oldest family owned and run boarding school in Switzerland, which offers a warm welcoming environment. Brillantmont has the best of both worlds - close to the amenities of the beautiful city of Lausanne, but just minutes from mountains, lakes and nature.

The school welcomes boarding and day students, aged 13-18 (Grades 8-12) from many different nationalities. Small classes (av. 9) lead to internationally recognised examinations (British IGCSE, A Level; High School Diploma ).
