Extracurricular activities: Middle School students headed to Scotland

Written by Sarah Frei | 24-Jun-2013 13:43:00

This year, the Middle School went to the Scottish Highlands as part of their programme, along with Mrs Nikyuluw, Ms Richmond and Mr Robbins. The five-day course, run by the Outward Bounds Trust, concentrated on developing a number of skills such as decision-making, leadership and communication, as well as linking classwork on climate change, the environment and sustainability with activities in the field.

Alongside their serious studies, students got wet and muddy as they went gorge walking, canoed on the picturesque lochs, overcame obstacle courses and sped through the woods on zip-wires – but not before first taking a wee dip in Loch Eil! They also had the opportunity to take part in rock climbing on the slopes of Britain’s highest mountain – Ben Nevis – and camp on the shores of the Loch by firelight.

The students set daily personal targets, which were reviewed by the course instructors back in the Highland Lodge that resides on the shores of the Loch. The students enjoyed splendid views of the Scottish countryside and even caught sight of the train we all know as the Hogwarts Express as it passed by.

The students each picked pictures from the trip to accompany a short summary of their favourite activities. Here are a few snippets:

“The expedition was my favourite activity of the week. I enjoyed the expedition because the view we got from where we were camping was lovely and we all felt very free there. The people I was with also made the expedition worthwhile. We all made each other laugh and got to have a pleasant time in this paradise.” – Abbie

“On the morning of day 2, our clan called Macloud went canoeing and it was really fun because we saw the Hogwarts Express which was huge and beautiful because it had tables for tea.” – Gianni “Gorge walking was my favourite activity. We had special suits that we needed to wear; we were walking in the water through a lot of slippery rocks. We jumped from very tall rocks. It was a lot of fun. I really liked it.” – Tamara
