A buzz in the air at Brillantmont as we prepare for a special Reading Week

We are looking forward to celebrating the 10th year anniversary of our annual Reading Week this December. It is always an exciting time with fun events, which bring the whole school together and celebrate the power of words.

For the bumper birthday edition, poetry will be in the spotlight as students are given the opportunity to attend workshops led by spoken word poet Jamaal Jackson Rogers and film-maker and educator Randy Kelly. They will be guided in expressing ideas and feelings that are important to them using the medium of spoken word poetry, and will transform these into cine-poems.

What’s that, you may ask? A cine-poem is a short video produced in the style of a music video, used to recount a poem. Sounds intriguing doesn’t it?  A showcase at the end of the week will provide the opportunity to perform the poems live and share the cinepoems. The result promises to be both meaningful and inspiring.

The whole school is already involved in preparing a patchwork of diamante poems which will be on display for our upcoming Parents’ Day and students are encouraged to express their artistic soul for the bookmark competition.

Reading is an essential activity that helps our students develop their thinking skills, increases their vocabulary, develop their memory and their imagination.  What’s more, research shows that reading books helps social well-being as it increases empathy and emotional intelligence.

At Brillantmont, we believe it is vital to encourage our students to read for pleasure. During Reading Week, every day, at a specific time, students everywhere on campus will ‘Drop Everything And Read’, and during the bookfair, everyone will be able to rediscover all-time favourites, and peruse recent bestsellers as well as comics and non-fiction books.

Check back soon to read more about this fun week.
